It’s common knowledge among Penn Staters that Penn State’s colors are blue and white—but did you know that until 1890 Penn State athletes wore pink and black uniforms?!

According to Penn State: an illustrated history by Michael Bezilla, “The sun and several launderings soon bleached the [uniform’s] pink to white, making a change in colors imperative.”

In 1890 the Athletic Association selected the colors dark blue and white, which the student body later approved.

Last year to help celebrate Homecoming and its 2008 theme, “Inspired by Tradition,” the S-Zone displayed Penn State’s original colors, pink and black.
